This year I got my first job. Dog walking.
I may not be making big money, but I am making a-few-things-at Target money, and that’s a start. Like most of my friends, I wanted a little freedom (and I’m sure my parents wanted that too), and since I’m not old enough for a real job like Publix or Starbucks, I went for something equally important: being a dog’s bestie.
My neighbor trusted me with her adorable pup, Cooper. He’s one of those dogs that looks like he could have a TikTok fan base. She gave me a list of instructions, handed me a key, and I was off. Three walks a day. Feed. Bathroom breaks. Lots of petting and tail wags.
The first day, I set my alarm and actually beat it. (Who am I?) I grabbed my crocs, threw my hair in a ponytail, and strolled confidently to Cooper’s. The job was going great… until day three. I may or may not have snoozed my alarm (okay, I totally snoozed it), and had to fly out the door with my stained t-shirt, and bedhead.
Just when I thought I had things under control, a Florida rainstorm happened. If you don't know, we get sudden, crazy, rain that lasts just for a short time before the sunshine comes back out. If you live or visit Florida, you understand. At first it was funny but then it got scary. Cooper and I had to sprint like it was a dramatic movie scene. I was going so fast, my croc slipped right off my foot!
We got him home safe, soaking wet but still smiling. I was going to wait until the rain stopped but figured I’d just make a run for it home when I saw my mom charging down the sidewalk with a giant umbrella laughing. “I figured you forgot one!” Leave it to mom to save the day and I was happy to see her!
My neighbor said I did a great job taking care of Cooper. This job might not be fancy, but I’m learning responsibility, making memories, and earning my own money. Plus, Cooper thinks I’m pretty awesome-and that’s worth all the rain in Florida.
